CIRA is addressing the issue of underrepresentation of Indigenous people in online photography by introducing a brand-new collection of stock images.
Despite the existence of over 60,000 Indigenous businesses in Canada, they are rarely showcased on websites and digital platforms, according to CIRA, the non-profit organization responsible for managing the .ca domain.
“While Indigenous creators and entrepreneurs are making a significant impact online, they are not provided with adequate resources that accurately represent their community,” stated Spencer Callaghan, CIRA’s Director of Brand and Communications.
In collaboration with Pow Wow Pitch and Shelby Lisk, an Indigenous photographer, CIRA has developed a free photo library featuring exclusively Indigenous content. All of the photos feature Indigenous models and were taken at Indigenous-owned businesses.
“The CIRA stock photo project is a significant stride towards ensuring that Indigenous and non-Indigenous businesses in Canada have access to diverse stock photography that accurately represents their organizations,” commented Sunshine Tenasco, the founder of Pow Wow Pitch.
Interested individuals can download the photos created through this project at cira.ca/indigenous-stock-images.
