Chris Hemsworth’s action-packed thrillers, the Extraction films, have taken over the top two spots on Netflix’s global chart. Audiences worldwide are finding solace in watching Hemsworth annihilate henchmen and barely escape alive. The first Extraction film, released in 2020, received moderate attention due to its ambitious action scenes and Hemsworth’s captivating performance, despite a lackluster storyline. However, its sequel, Extraction 2, has raised the bar with a better narrative, even more outrageous action sequences, and higher production values that enhance the visual effects. Extraction 2 has left audiences in awe, featuring a jaw-dropping 21-minute faux one-take sequence, starting with a prison escape and ending on a runaway train.

These movies have dominated Netflix’s worldwide chart for films, with Extraction 2 amassing a staggering 42,800,000 views in the week of June 12th to June 18th, while the original film garnered an additional 9,600,000 views. Third place is occupied by Paw Patrol: The Movie, known for its entertaining babysitting capabilities. Following closely is Boss Baby in fourth place. Surprisingly, in fifth place is the 2016 adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, starring Michael Fassbender, a film previously thought to be universally overlooked.

Clearly, Netflix has no plans of stopping the Extraction franchise after the tremendous success it has achieved. Discussions are already underway for a third installment, where the filmmakers aim to create an entire movie that appears to be one continuous shot, placing them in the league of visionary French director Gaspar Noe. This unique approach promises a more intriguing experience, moving away from the comparisons to Marvel and showcasing the distinctive talents of the Russo brothers and Sam Hargrave.
