Maize roots secrete chemicals that have an impact on soil quality. Research conducted by the University of Bern has shown that in certain fields, these chemicals can increase the yield of wheat by more than 4% when planted after maize in the same soil. While there is variability in these effects, they have the potential to make grain cultivation more sustainable without the need for additional fertilizers or pesticides in the long run.
