Chapter 4′ was Initially Concluded Differently

When the highly anticipated film John Wick: Chapter 4 was released earlier this year, audiences were left with mixed interpretations of its ending. While it might seem clear that the main character, played by the talented Keanu Reeves, meets his demise after fulfilling his obligations and succumbing to his injuries, the scene is open to speculation, leaving fans wondering if Wick is truly dead. As fans eagerly await more John Wick action, director Chad Stahelski reveals that the film initially had a less ambiguous ending.

While the future of the John Wick franchise is uncertain – with reports suggesting a fifth film is in development but Stahelski’s decision still pending – the director shared that the conclusion of Chapter 4 could have been more definitive. Stahelski revealed to Empire, “We had a different ending. [The theatrical ending] was the ending Keanu and I wanted, but we shot a different ending.” This alternative ending would have eliminated any doubt about Wick’s fate from the very beginning. Stahelski explained, “we shot an ending where you actually saw John Wick at the end of the movie. So it was very clear that he was still alive. The audiences we tested with absolutely preferred the ambiguous ending.”

In the theatrical version of the film, when Winston (Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) visit Wick’s grave, the Bowery King questions whether Wick has gone to “heaven or hell,” to which Winston replies, “who knows.” This moment sparked numerous fan theories, as viewers speculated that Wick faked his death to live a peaceful life. The speculation only grew when Wick’s loyal pitbull suddenly turns its head towards someone or something mysterious.

Chapter 4 Was Always Meant to be Wick’s End

Although the possibility of Wick’s return remains uncertain in John Wick 5, it was the director’s intention to bring a definitive conclusion to the story of the relentless assassin in Chapter 4. Both Stahelski and Reeves were dissatisfied with Chapter 3 – Parabellum, with the director expressing, “We didn’t feel like we had done our best. We both felt like we could have ended the series better.” He further explained, “We didn’t feel like we stuck the landing, and that’s a disappointing feeling. Because we love the character, we love working together, we love the world.” This led to their decision to continue the story while ensuring that Wick would meet his end in the most spectacular way possible.

While the future of the John Wick franchise may be uncertain, fans can still look forward to the prequel series The Continental and the upcoming film Ballerina, led by the talented Ana de Armas.
