A majority of Canadians are in agreement that prominent tech companies such as Google and Meta should be obligated to pay for their use of Canadian content. However, recent data collected by the Angus Reid Institute reveals that Canadians have concerns regarding the government’s enforcement of this action.
The Online News Act (Bill C-28) was given royal assent last month, mandating Meta, Google, and other companies to compensate news publishers for utilizing their content. As a result, both Meta and Google have stated that they will block users from accessing Canadian news content on their respective platforms.
According to a survey conducted by Angus Reid, 61 percent of Canadians believe that “Big Tech” companies should pay news organizations for sharing their content. However, 63 percent of Canadians are also worried about losing access to Canadian news on Facebook and Google, suggesting that the government should consider alternative approaches. The data also indicates that 48 percent of Canadians would like the government to reconsider its position.
In a recent development, the federal government decided to halt its advertising on Facebook and Instagram. The same measures were not imposed on Google, as the company expressed its willingness to continue discussing a way forward.
The Angus Reid Institute gathered survey results from 1,610 Canadians between July 4th and 6th via an online platform.
