Video game aficionados are ready to assemble for a new Avengers video game, swing with Spidey – and answer the Call of Duty.

Marvel’s Avengers, due out Sept. 4 for PC, PS4, Xbox One, is the first arriving of the most anticipated video games of the rest of 2020, according to Nielsen Games’ Most Anticipated Games list.

Just as anticipated are Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (Nov. 13, for PC, PS4, Xbox One; and coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X), and Spider-Man: Miles Morales (coming to the PlayStation 5 this year). All three games tied with a top rank of 97 on Nielsen Games’ list.

Summer video games: Coronavirus-curbed video gamers are falling for ‘Fall Guys’ and these other diversions

The research firm surveyed more than 6,000 active gamers, age seven to 54, from July 12-Aug. 15, 2020 about more than 80 different games. A Game Rank index of overall anticipation for the game is arrived at based on awareness, interest, urgency, consumer rating and other factors. Those games getting a rank of 70 or higher were included in the list.

In past years, video game makers did not reveal release dates so early in the season. But the coronavirus pandemic and the release of new game systems – Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony’s PS5, both coming this holiday season – have changed the game, Nielsen says.

“The biggest impact of COVID-19 on this list would be the games that are not on this list, due to a delay in launching,” Scott Pitchford, Nielsen’s director of research and client consulting for games, told USA TODAY.

The biggest titles delayed: Halo Infinite, which had been planned to be an Xbox Series X launch title, now slated for 2021, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, coming in spring 2021.

The pandemic could continue to have an effect on video game releases, Pitchford says.

“Whether or not the developer or publisher directly attributes that delay to COVID-19 publicly, or simply to the usual ambiguous reason of needing ‘more polish’, it’s safe to assume that the virus certainly played at least some part in that,” he said. “Similarly, the release dates for some of the games that are still included on the list at the moment are more tenuous than usual, and we may see a few more of these end up slipping into 2021 in the coming weeks.”
