The Boys Showrunner/EP Eric Kripke Discusses Season 4 & Beyond
In a July 2022 interview with Variety, Eric Kripke discussed various aspects of The Boys, including Butcher, Ryan, Queen Maeve, Starlight, Soldier Boy, and Black Noir. Find the complete interview here. Here are some key excerpts:
So Should We Be Expecting Ryan to Go “Brightburn”? According to Kripke, Ryan plays a crucial role in the story as he possesses a mix of Becca and Homelander’s DNA. If Butcher can successfully retrieve the child, it could become their most powerful weapon against Homelander. However, if Homelander manages to win over Ryan, the consequences would be catastrophic. Kripke describes it as a dramatic story with apocalyptic stakes, comparing it to a blend of “Kramer vs. Kramer” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
How Will Butcher React to Knowing He’s on a “Crazy Ticking Clock”? Kripke explores Butcher’s character, noting that he still has unfinished business and a history of failed attempts. The show seeks to delve into Butcher’s self-awareness and examine whether he can change his approach. These questions will be central to Season 4.
Maeve’s Leaving Will Make Things Tougher for Starlight… at Least Until She Returns? Kripke emphasizes that Maeve’s departure from the show is not permanent. The aim was to give her a positive ending with Elena without resorting to the trope of killing LGBTQ+ characters. This decision also allows Annie (Starlight) to grow independently, placing her in a situation where she must rely solely on herself. Kripke affirms that Maeve will make a comeback in the future.
Black Noir Is Dead! Long Live Black Noir! Kripke hints at the possibility of recasting Black Noir, the silent character with a mask, by introducing a different actor in flashbacks. This opens the door for the return of Nathan Mitchell, the original Black Noir actor.
Just Because Soldier Boy’s on Ice Doesn’t Mean He Can’t Return… Right? Kripke adheres to the TV adage of never closing doors, leaving room for the potential return of Soldier Boy. The continuation of the series may include his reappearance.
