BT broadband down: internet across the UK not working due to heatwave

BT has confirmed that “large parts of the UK” are suffering problems with their internet connection. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) says it’s working to fix the issue as soon as possible, but has not given an update on when you can expect your home broadband to be back up-and-running.

As millions of people stay home to work, study and socialise with family and friends using web apps and video conferencing tools, the broadband connection could cause severe disruption. The problems with BT broadband services seems to have been caused by the current weather – with large swathes of the UK suffering stifling temperatures of 37ºC, while thunderstorms batter other parts of the country.

According to independent website DownDetector, which tracks the scale out outages and problems with online services by tracking social media mentions, shows 1,040 reports every minute from BT customers suffering with internet problems.

Of those, some 64 percent have complained about issues accessing the internet, while 31 percent cannot access their BT Mail inbox. Using the geolocation of the social media reports, DownDetector has showed that the reports are coming from across the UK.

On BT’s Service Status webpage, the company says: “Due to recent weather conditions, and in particular the thunderstorms, we are aware of problems affecting parts of the UK which may be causing problems with your telephone service and connecting to the internet. We are working to fix this as soon as possible but if you are aware of a recent thunderstorm in your local area, a restart of your router may resolve your issue.”
