Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Takes Us Back to the 90s
The latest installment in the Transformers series, Rise of the Beasts, transports us back to the 90s. As the franchise moves closer to the 2007 Transformers era, the production team must toe the line between keeping it fresh and respecting the established continuity. In a recent interview with Collider, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke about striking this balance.
“We’re very conscious of, let’s call them the first five [Michael] Bay movies. We do our best not to contradict the things we laced in there and played with there. So, one of the freedoms we get is that we’re not entirely bound to what the world knows about them, for instance, which is really helpful. We don’t have cell phones at our time period – very helpful in storytelling.”
This means that while the production team isn’t afraid to be creative, they’re mindful of not breaking the continuity established in previous films. The film’s setting in the 90s also presents unique opportunities for storytelling, such as the absence of cell phones.
Speaking of creativity, di Bonaventura emphasized that the team’s primary focus is creating a movie that stands on its own, rather than checking off boxes for future sequels or a shared universe:
“We’re trying to keep this experience fresh for the audience. There are certain things we want to hit because they’re particular to the Transformers world, but we can’t allow the past to sort of dictate so much that we can’t introduce a new character or we can’t have a character do something that’s really essential for this story.”
One of the new characters in Rise of the Beasts is Mirage, voiced by Saturday Night Live’s Pete Davidson. According to di Bonaventura, Mirage is a valuable addition to the Autobots and is likely to play a role in future installments.
It’s important to note that while the franchise has established continuity, the transition from script to screen is not always predictable:
“A blockbuster changes too much from page to screen, so…it just doesn’t feel organic to me.”
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts premieres June 9 and tells the story of how Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and other Autobots ended up on Earth. The addition of the Maximals, robots that transform into wild animals, opens up new avenues for the Transformers universe. Although the future is uncertain, one thing is for sure: di Bonaventura and his team are committed to keeping it fresh.
