The Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) has imposed a SEK 58 million ($5.4 million) fine on Spotify after finding that the music streaming giant had infringed the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The IMY’s decision follows a complaint against Spotify, filed by the advocacy group Noyb, which asserted that the company had failed to provide all personal data to users upon request and failed to disclose why users’ personal information was being processed. While Spotify claims to offer all users detailed information about its data processing activities, the IMY argued that the company needed to be more transparent about how and for what purposes individuals’ personal data is handled. Although the IMY considered the infringements to be low in severity and acknowledged that Spotify had taken steps to address them, it also took into account the company’s high revenue, large user base, and international reach. Spotify has publicly vowed to appeal the decision.
