Boulder officials are looking for bids from internet service providers to supply high-speed, broadband service.
City workers have been building a fiber backbone since 2018 that will be able to supply fiber-based internet service. That construction is now nearly complete. City officials plan to offer a long-term lease of the backbone infrastructure to a provider who will deliver an internet bandwidth of 1 Gbps or more to homes and businesses in Boulder.
Affordable residential and commercial broadband service has been a topic of discussion in Boulder for some time. The city has a fiber-optic backbone to support broadband service, but after discussing possible paths forward at a study session in August, the City Council voted in October to have a private company own and operate the internet utility. At that time, council members gave the green light to the city manager to pursue negotiations with a private internet service provider to supply these services.
Internet service providers can find the formal request for proposal at www.bidnetdirect.com/colorado. Proposals must be submitted by 4 p.m. March 1.
