SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher has responded to Disney CEO Bob Iger’s dismissive comments on the ongoing strike negotiations, offering Disney some free advice.
Just before the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) National Board authorized a strike, Disney CEO Bob Iger shared his thoughts on the failed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) during an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” His comments, in which he deemed the unions’ demands as “not realistic,” received backlash from SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America (WGA). Now, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher has not held back on her criticism of Iger and has some advice for Disney.
Drescher expressed her strong disapproval of Iger’s comments, describing them as “terribly repugnant and out of touch.” She believes that Iger’s lack of understanding of the challenges faced by hard-working individuals, who earn a fraction of his salary, has done the company a disservice. Drescher suggested that Iger should be kept away from speaking publicly about the ongoing situation. In an interview with Variety, she shared her views on the matter.
Iger had stated that while he understands the unions’ desire to fight for better compensation, writers and actors need to be realistic about the current business environment and what it can deliver. He emphasized the damaging effects the strike would have on the industry, particularly on supportive services and regional economies. He expressed disappointment with the situation.
Despite Iger’s viewpoint, Drescher remains firm in her belief that the unions’ demands are justified and necessary. She believes that Iger’s dismissive comments only amplify the challenges faced by the industry, and she criticizes his lack of empathy for those who do not earn exorbitant salaries. Drescher’s interview with Variety on the matter can be watched below.
