Bob Iger Says He Wants the Dual Strike to “End Quickly”

The importance of creativity was underscored by the CEO of the renowned Walt Disney Company during a recent earnings call. Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, expressed his optimism for a swift resolution to the ongoing strike while emphasizing his personal dedication to finding solutions. At the core of the strike is the issue of inadequate compensation for actors and writers when their content performs exceptionally well on streaming platforms. This ongoing strike has resulted in significant delays in the production of key Disney projects such as Deadpool 3 and Star Wars series like Andor. Unfortunately, no end to the strike is in sight until equitable agreements are offered to workers.

During today’s earnings call, Bob Iger, the current CEO of The Walt Disney Company, expressed his hope for a quick resolution to the ongoing strike that the Writers Guild of America has endured for a staggering 100 days. The conflict escalated when studios refused to provide fair wages to their employees, leading to SAG-AFTRA joining the writers after a brief period of time. While discussing the decrease in Disney+ subscribers during the last quarter, Bob Iger took a moment to address the ongoing strike, stating, “I am fervently hopeful that we swiftly find resolutions to the challenges that have divided us in recent months, and I am personally committed to achieving this outcome.”

A central point of contention in the ongoing strike revolves around the meager compensation that actors and writers receive when their shows or movies perform exceptionally well on streaming platforms. Regardless of whether their work is part of Netflix or Max catalogs, most guild members struggle to earn a sustainable living, even though the projects they contribute to generate millions of dollars for the studios. The only path to resolving this dual strike is for studios to offer a fair deal to both actors and writers that recognizes their hard work and provides proper compensation.

The strike will significantly impact Disney’s major productions as well. Deadpool 3, featuring Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the talkative Marvel superhero, along with Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine for the first time in over five years, will experience delays. Filming for the highly anticipated sequel came to a halt weeks ago and will not resume until the studios offer the guilds a fair agreement. Studios should carefully consider the consequences of prolonging the situation, as it affects their ability to release major projects.

Furthermore, the Star Wars franchise, among others at Disney, is also suffering the consequences of the strike. The absence of theatrical releases for the franchise has shifted its focus to television series premiering on Disney+. However, even these projects cannot move forward until a resolution is reached. After the first season of Andor garnered a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, production on the second installment had to be abruptly halted because media conglomerates were hesitant to provide fair wages to their workers. The return of Diego Luna as the titular hero remains uncertain until the strike concludes.
