Before Netflix Launch: Mech Cadets Print Runs and First Appearances.

Discover the Print Runs and First Appearances of Mech Cadets comics and characters from Boom Studios, leading up to the highly anticipated Netflix launch later this year.

As previously reported by Bleeding Cool, the animated adaptation of Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa’s Mech Cadets, produced by Polygon Pictures, will be available on Netflix starting August 10th. To align with the release, publisher Boom Studios is rebranding and relaunching the series, with the first issue hitting shelves one day before the Netflix debut.

Notably, Mech Cadets has generated early buzz for its selection into the prestigious Annecy animation film festival, featuring a star-studded voice cast including Daniel Dae Kim, Ming Na Wen, Debra Wilson, and Brandon Soo Hoo. Another Annecy selection with comic book origins, N.D. Stevenson’s Nimona, recently premiered on Netflix and quickly climbed the charts. Like Nimona, Mech Cadets is receiving praise for its inclusive representation, both in its voice cast and production team. Will Mech Cadets receive a similar wave of support when it launches on the streaming platform in August?

With the final order cut-off for the first issue of the new comic book series approaching, now is the perfect time to provide collectors with a cheat sheet of key issues and first appearances from the original series.

Unsurprisingly, the must-have issue is Mech Cadet Yu #1, featuring the first appearances of Sanford Yu (portrayed by Brandon Soo Hoo), General Aiden Park (portrayed by Daniel Dae Kim), Dolly Yu (portrayed by Ming Na Wen), and other crucial Cadets such as Olivia Park (portrayed by Victoria Grace), Maya Sanchez (portrayed by Anairis Quinones), Frank Olivetti (portrayed by Josh Sundquist), and Skip Tanaka (portrayed by James Yaegashi). The issue also introduces the Cadets’ robos, including Hero Force One, Buddy, Big Red, and Thunderwrecker (though only Hero Force One is named in the issue).

The main cover by Takeshi Miyazawa is the most iconic and widely available, but its print run was limited to less than 6,000 copies, making it potentially scarce in the future. The Juan Doe Transformers movie poster homage variant is even rarer, with less than 1,500 copies printed, and may attract collectors’ interest due to Skybound’s recent relaunch of Transformers in Robert Kirkman’s new Energon Universe. However, the most elusive cover is the Sonny Liew FOC Reveal variant, with fewer than 1,000 copies in circulation. While all three covers were initially selling for $40 or less in ungraded condition, graded copies at higher price points are now surfacing online.

Mech Cadet Yu #2 is a recommended pick for more budget-conscious collectors or completists, as it features the first appearance of Chief Max (portrayed by Debra Wilson) and the naming of robos Buddy, Big Red, and Thunderwrecker. Issue #3 also holds a significant first appearance, introducing the alien enemy The Sharg. Both issues had a total print run of under 6,000 copies and may become increasingly challenging to find once the show is released.

For collectors and readers who prefer not to pay a premium on resale platforms, preordering Mech Cadets #1 through local comic shops by the upcoming Monday at cover price is an option. However, there are also 1-in-25 incentive variant and 1-in-50 foil incentive variant covers by superstar artist Junggeun Yoon, which may feature additional key first appearances. Whether these new characters will appear in Boom’s first Netflix series remains to be seen.

Fans of the highly anticipated Netflix series won’t want to miss this perfect companion series by highly acclaimed writer Greg Pak (Star Wars: Darth Vader), superstar artist Takeshi Miyazawa (She-Hulk), and colorist Ian Herring (Spider-Man / Deadpool). General Park, head of Sky Corps Academy, must assemble a team of heroes to protect humankind from alien invasions. Stanford Yu, Maya Sanchez, Frank Olivetti, and Park’s own daughter, Olivia, may have been destined to assume this role as Earth’s best hope. However, their relationships with the symbiotic, sentient giant Robos they pilot hold more secrets, and the alien threat of The Sharg is far more colossal and widespread than anyone could have imagined. Mech Cadets offers a fresh debut for both new readers and viewers, while long-time fans can revel in the new adventures following the highly anticipated collection of Mech Cadets Book One!
