Baldur’s Gate III Peaks at Over 800,000 Concurrent Players on Steam; Larian Studios Only Expected 100,000

Baldur’s Gate III continues to dominate the Steam charts, achieving unprecedented success by surpassing 800,000 concurrent players on August 6. It currently holds the ninth position on the list of all-time peak PC games, just below Hogwarts Legacy. This remarkable accomplishment is particularly impressive considering that the game has been in early access for nearly three years. This extended development period allowed developer Larian Studios to refine and enhance the game based on valuable player feedback. The official release of Baldur’s Gate III on August 3 only served to further solidify its popularity.

The success of Baldur’s Gate III can be attributed to its captivating storyline, well-developed characters, and unique romance options that are determined by statistical calculations and dice rolls. The game’s simplified Dungeons & Dragons role-playing mechanics have resonated with a newer generation of gamers who have grown tired of excessive microtransactions, in-game purchases, and constant internet connectivity requirements. Moreover, Larian Studios demonstrated their commitment to their loyal fans by providing free cosmetic items to those who supported the game’s development through Early Access. This level of understanding and collaboration between players and developers undoubtedly contributed to the game’s overwhelming success, surpassing even the studio’s own expectations.

In a recent tweet, Larian CEO Swen Vincke expressed his expectation that Baldur’s Gate III would attract over 100,000 players. To everyone’s surprise, the game exceeded this prediction by amassing over 500,000 players on launch day alone. It quickly climbed the charts and now stands alongside multiplayer giants Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2, having crossed the 800,000 player milestone. Vincke’s only concern at this point is the absence of any major game-breaking bugs. In an interview, he confessed, “God, I hope there’s no big bug left. I don’t want to have that anger over me, but it’s part of the risk of making these very large RPGs.” The studio’s previous title, Divinity: Original Sin II, which shared similar turn-based combat mechanics and was also based on DnD, peaked at just over 93,000 players.

While specific sales figures for Baldur’s Gate III are not yet available, the decision to move up the PC release date from August 31 to August 3 proved to be a wise move. This strategy allowed the game to avoid competing with other highly anticipated titles such as Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, EA’s Immortals of Aveum, and Starfield, scheduled for release in September. What is truly striking about this achievement is that Baldur’s Gate III’s turn-based RPG design is somewhat uncommon in mainstream gaming nowadays. Nevertheless, both dedicated fans and newcomers alike have flocked to purchase the game, despite the fact that it has been two decades since the previous installment. Its rich lore and extensive gameplay have even caused some developers to express concerns that it may set a new standard for RPGs, sparking both excitement and backlash within the gaming community. At present, it stands as a strong contender for Game of the Year, generating a level of hype comparable to that of Elden Ring last year.

Baldur’s Gate III is currently available on PC, with the PS5 version set for release on September 6. Xbox platforms may have to wait until 2024 to experience the game.
