Baldur’s Gate III First Patch Will Include Over 1,000 Fixes, Changes to Character Customisation in Works

The highly anticipated Baldur’s Gate III is on the verge of receiving its first major patch. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke has revealed a roadmap on Twitter, outlining plans to address issues and make necessary adjustments to ability balances based on user feedback. The upcoming hotfix #4 will address critical crash and progression block issues, as well as any bugs affecting the general interface. This will be followed by a massive patch that boasts over 1,000 fixes, and then patch 2, which will incorporate some user requests. While the specific nature of these requests remains unclear, it has been confirmed that the team is working on an update that will allow players to modify their character’s appearance during gameplay.

The revelation about the character appearance update comes from Michael Douse, Director of Publishing at Larian Studios. In response to a fan’s tweet expressing the desire to change their look in the game, Douse confirmed that the team is indeed working on implementing this feature. Currently, once players select their initial appearance at the start of their Baldur’s Gate 3 journey, they are unable to alter it throughout the game. This limitation does not apply to character classes, as players can respec by interacting with the NPC Withers at their campsite for a fee of 100 gold pieces. This restriction on appearance customization is an anomaly in a role-playing game known for its extensive customization options in other areas, some of which are tied to the game’s story elements. It is speculated that this limitation may be due to the need for flawless integration with all cutscenes, starting from their creation.

Another possible reason for the desire to change appearance is related to lighting effects. Certain colors chosen during character creation may appear fine on the character screen but end up looking too dull or bright when seen in the game’s environment. When Larian eventually introduces the appearance update, there may be more immersive ways to implement it. For example, instead of accessing a menu or interacting with an NPC, players could visit the rogue Astarion’s tent and use his mirror to change their appearance, similar to the mirror found at the Roundtable Hold in Elden Ring. It would also be beneficial if players could change their looks without any limits or requirements for in-game currency or consumables.

The most recent hotfix (#3) for the game brings improvements such as Scratch, the dog, autonomously finding digging spots and resolving various bugs in Act 3, some of which were preventing players from completing the game. Since its release earlier this month, Baldur’s Gate 3 has achieved great success, reaching a peak concurrent player count of 875,343 on Steam. This achievement solidifies its position as the ninth-highest-ranking PC game, just below Hogwarts Legacy. In an interview, Larian boss Swen Vincke initially believed that the game had already reached its peak due to being playable in early access for three years. He expected the full launch to attract only 100,000 players, but was taken aback by the overwhelming response, with eight times that number joining in.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PC, with the PS5 version set to release on September 6. The Xbox release may not occur until 2024.
