Baldur’s Gate III is gearing up for its first patch, and it appears to be a substantial one. CEO Swen Vincke of Larian Studios recently shared a roadmap on Twitter, ensuring that they will address issues and make necessary adjustments to ability balances based on user feedback. The initial patch, hotfix #4, will address crash and progression blockage emergencies, as well as any bugs that impact the overall user interface. Following that, a massive patch with over 1,000 fixes will be released, followed by patch 2 incorporating some user requests. While the specific requests are unknown, the team has already announced plans to allow players to change their character’s appearance during gameplay.
This plan was revealed by Michael Douse, Director of Publishing at Larian Studios, in response to a fan’s tweet expressing the desire to modify their character’s appearance in the game. Currently, once players select their appearance at the start of their Baldur’s Gate 3 journey, they are unable to change it throughout the game. This is not the case with character classes, as players can respec them by interacting with the NPC Withers at the campsite for a cost of 100 gold pieces. This restriction on appearance customization is an unusual feature for a role-playing game, especially considering the extensive customization options available in other aspects of the game. Presumably, this limitation is due to the need for flawless integration with all cutscenes created for the game.
We’re all very enthused by your feedback. It’s very rewarding. Our focus now is fixing any issues you report, but we are listening to suggestions. Current roadmap: a) Hotfix 4, b) Patch 1 (+1000 fixes and tweaks), c) Patch 2. The latter will already incorporate some requests.

Another reason players may want to change their appearance is related to the game’s lighting effects. Colors that may look appealing during character creation, such as teal or pink, may appear dull or excessively bright in the game’s environment. When Larian implements the update allowing appearance changes, there could be more imaginative methods to do so. For example, instead of accessing a menu or interacting with an NPC, players could visit the rogue Astarion’s tent and utilize his mirror to alter their appearance, similar to the mirror at the Roundtable Hold in Elden Ring. It would also be beneficial if there were no restrictions on the frequency of appearance changes or any in-game currency or consumables required.
The most recent hotfix (hotfix #3) includes an enhancement where the player’s dog Scratch can now autonomously find digging spots. Additionally, several bugs in Act 3, some of which hindered game completion, have been resolved. Since its release earlier this month, Baldur’s Gate 3 has experienced rapid success, reaching a peak concurrent player count of 875,343 on Steam. This achievement solidifies its position as the ninth-highest-ranking PC game, just below Hogwarts Legacy. During an interview, Larian boss Svencke expressed concern that the game had already peaked during its three-year early access phase. Consequently, he expected the full launch to attract only 100,000 players, but was pleasantly surprised when it exceeded his predictions by eight times the amount.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PC, with the PS5 version set to release on September 6. The Xbox platforms may not see a release before 2024.
