The mysterious creature on the cover of Norman Saunders’ Stories from Another World #4 may resemble a zombie, but its true nature is far more sinister.

We recently highlighted Norman Saunders’ iconic eyeball cover for Fawcett’s Worlds of Fear #10. Now, another one of Saunders’ masterpieces, the cover of Strange Stories from Another World #4 from Fawcett, emerges as a classic. While Saunders is most renowned for his pulp magazine covers, he also contributed over 100 comic book covers, primarily for Fawcett and Ziff-Davis. Many of these covers have been underappreciated, but there’s a notable Pre-Code Horror cover by Saunders up for auction at Heritage Auctions: Strange Stories from Another World #4 (Fawcett Publications, 1952) Condition: FN, available in the 2023 July 13 – 14 Pre-Code Horror & Crime Comics Showcase Auction #40227.

Saunders began his career at Fawcett from 1928 to 1934, working as a staff artist on publications like Captain Billy’s Whiz Bang and Modern Mechanix. He then became a prolific cover artist for pulps until World War II interrupted his work. After the war, Saunders seamlessly transitioned to the evolving mass-market publishing industry, producing artwork for comics and paperback publishers, among others. The cover of Strange Stories from Another World #4 is based on the interior story Monsters of the Mind written by William Woolfolk and illustrated by Bob McCarty. Although the interior story does not revolve around an undead creature like the cover suggests, one can understand why Saunders made that creative choice based on the tale’s description. The story follows a man who becomes relentlessly pursued by otherworldly creatures of unknown origin, visible only to him. When the creatures finally catch up, he undergoes a transformation and becomes one of them.

This eerie story is excellently portrayed on the cover by Saunders, and the rest of the issue offers solid Pre-Code Horror material, including the lead story Pillar of Stone by Sheldon Moldoff. A rarity in horror output from Fawcett, this extraordinary copy of Strange Stories from Another World #4 (Fawcett Publications, 1952) Condition: FN is now available in the 2023 July 13 – 14 Pre-Code Horror & Crime Comics Showcase Auction #40227 at Heritage Auctions.
