On Thursday, Asus launch its flagship ZenFone AR in India at Rs 49,999. It will go on sale from 4pm IST exclusively on Flipkart.
The main USP of the smartphone is 8GB of RAM and support for Google Tango augmented reality (AR) platform as well as the Google Daydream virtual reality (VR) platform.The smartphone was first unveiled back at CES 2017.
The ZenFone AR is the second phone with Google Tango after Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, which is now available for Rs 24,990. The Phab 2 Pro is the world’s first phone to support Google Tango, but it doesn’t support Google Daydream. But the Zenfone AR takes advantage of Google’s Project Tango for delivering seamless augmented reality experience. The possibilities are endless with Google Tango platform. It can be used for gaming, educational and shopping.
Apart from AR/ VR support, the Asus Zenfone AR also loaded with bunch of camera features, it comes with TriCam system which comprises of three cameras: a 23MP main camera, a motion-tracking camera and a depth-sensing camera with dual-PDAF, laser autofocus, OIS, and EIS, apart from an infrared (IR) rangefinder. The smartphone also sports a “premium-crafted metallic diamond-cut” body, and bears a fingerprint sensor on the home button.
The company is also touting the five-magnet speaker, NXP amplifier, Hi-Res Audio support, DTS HD Premium sound, DTS Headphone:X 7.1 channel virtual surround sound, and dual-microphone active noise cancellation for better audio quality.

Asus ZenFone AR specifications – Now let’s jump on the technical specifications, the Asus ZenFone AR runs on ZenUI 3.0 based on Android 7.0 Nougat operating system. It sports a 5.7” QHD (1440×2560 pixels) Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection a with Bluelight filter, and “industry-leading 60ms touch response time,” apart from support for gloves. The smartphone is powered by a Google Tango and Daydream VR performance optimised Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC (two cores clocked at 2.34GHz and two core clocked at 1.6GHz) and offers 8GB of RAM and 128GB internal UFS 2.0 storage which can be further expanded up to 2TB via microSD card.
For the photography, the Asus ZenFone AR sports a 23MP rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture, 6P Largan lens, TriTech Focus System (dual-PDAF, laser autofocus, and continuous autofocus), RGB sensor for colour correction, 4-axis OIS for photos, 3-axis EIS for videos, and RAW file support. On the front, there is an 8MP front facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture, an 85-degree wide-angle lens, and dual-LED flash. The front camera also offers HDR and real time beautification modes.
Connectivity options of Asus ZenFone AR include dual-SIM support, 4G VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v4.2, USB Type-C 2.0, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sensors onboard include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, digital compass, gyroscope, infrared sensor, and proximity sensor. The phone is powered by a 3300mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 which can charge the phone 60 percent in 18 mins with the help of 18W charger.
