Joe Maneely’s captivating cover for the 1954 Marvel/Atlas release Astonishing #30 perfectly complements the lead story in this issue.
The Marvel/Atlas title Astonishing had its beginnings as Marvel Boy in 1950, but was renamed to Astonishing with its third issue. While the series initially featured the Marvel Boy character until issue #6 (with his last cover appearance in Astonishing #5), the rebooted series took a darker turn towards horror. This Pre-Code era included remarkably stunning covers, especially by artists Bill Everett and Joe Maneely. Maneely’s cover for Astonishing #30 is a standout example, and an auction for Astonishing #30 (Atlas, 1954) CGC VG 4.0 Off-white pages is currently available at the 2023 July 13 – 14 Pre-Code Horror & Crime Comics Showcase Auction #40227 by Heritage Auctions.
Maneely’s cover for Astonishing #30 is derived from the interior story The Eyes by artist Pete Tumlinson. It is arguably one of the strangest Marvel/Atlas stories of the Pre-Code era. Across the globe, humans are under attack by giant disembodied eyeballs that can emit disintegration beams. It is discovered that these eyeball creatures aim to steal human eyes from freshly buried bodies and enlarge them, bolstering their bizarre eyeball army. One might even speculate that the Maneely cover preceded the creation of the story by Tumlinson and Stan Lee.
An additional standout story in this issue is Rulers of Earth by Joe Sinnott, in which alien invaders are defeated through strategic long-term planning. However, it is the captivating Joe Maneely cover that makes this issue highly sought-after by Pre-Code Horror collectors.
