Apple has expanded the availability of Tap to Pay and is now allowing businesses and merchants across the United Kingdom to accept contactless payments using their iPhones. This feature was initially released in the US in mid-2022 and later made available in Taiwan and Australia. Like in those regions, merchants in the UK can now receive payments without the need for additional hardware, as Tap to Pay utilizes NFC technology. As long as they have an iPhone XS or later model, they can offer contactless payment options for customers who use Apple Pay, contactless debit or credit cards, and other digital wallets.
In early 2022, Apple introduced this feature and tested it at its own visitor center in Cupertino. Following the rollout of Tap to Pay, popular fintech services like PayPal, Venmo, and Square added support for this feature.
According to Apple’s announcement, Revolut and Tyl by NatWest are the first payment platforms in the UK to integrate Apple’s Tap to Pay technology for their business customers. Adyen, Dojo, myPOS, Stripe, SumUp, Viva Wallet, Worldline, and Zettle by PayPal are among the financial services that will soon support this feature in the region. Although Apple didn’t specify an exact rollout date, they mentioned that Tap to Pay support will be “coming soon” for their customers. Additionally, Apple has revealed that Tap to Pay will be available in its retail stores across the UK in the coming weeks, making it convenient for UK customers to make purchases by simply tapping a card or another phone on the store’s iPhone.
