Apple’s iMessage coming to Android? Sounds exciting until you hear the catch

With a swathe of interactive features and trusted end-to-end security, it’s not surprising that Apple’s iMessage is such a popular way to keep in touch with friends and family. Sadly, if you don’t have an iPhone in your pocket or haven’t invested in Apple’s eco-system of pricey gadgets then you’ll be missing out as this is an exclusive app that’s not available on Android or Windows platforms.

That might be about to change though. A new app called Beeper, which is being developed by former Pebble smartwatch creator Eric Migicovsky, claims that it could bring iMessage to more devices including popular Android phones.

“Beeper is fast. A single app to chat on iMessage, WhatsApp, and 13 other networks. You can search, snooze, or archive messages. And with a unified inbox, you’ll never miss a message again,” the service boasts on its website.

The concept sounds really enticing with the app allowing you to have all your chats from iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, Telegram, Facebook Messenger and more all in one place.

This should end having to switch applications to keep in touch with all those different relatives, work colleagues and endless group chats.

Also, taking delivery of an iPhone to receive iMessages on your Android device feels like a pretty convoluted way of chatting with friends and we’re guessing most people will simply opt for a generic cross-platform service such as WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram.

We’ll have to wait and see if the idea actually takes off but we’re really not convinced this is the best way of accessing iMessage or how many Android fans will be willing to give it go. We’re also a little unsure how this news will go down with Apple especially with the firm being so security conscious.
