Apple Watch SE vs Watch Series 3: What new features do you get

Apple has launched an affordable Watch model dubbed as the Apple Watch SE. While the new Watch SE can be considered as an upgrade for Apple Watch 3 users in terms of design, display and performance but as far as features are concerned there are not many new useful health features. The new Apple Watch SE does not come with ECG and blood oxygen monitor. However, there are features like fall detection, always-on altimeter and international emergency calls.
Watch SE vs Watch 3 design
The new Apple Watch SE looks similar to the Apple Watch 6 and comes in 44mm or 40mm case sizes while the Apple Watch 3 offers 42mm or 38mm sizes. With the Watch SE, you get a bigger and brighter display. Also, the bezels are thinner in the Watch SE. Both the versions come in Aluminum finishes. As far as colours are concerned, The Watch 3 comes only in Grey and Silver options while the Watch SE offers an extra Gold variant.
Apple Watch SE and Watch 3 features
Watch SE comes with features like high and low heart rate notifications, irregular heart rhythm notifications that are there in Watch 3 as well. New features include an always-on altimeter. This feature allows for the detection of small elevation changes above ground level, up and down to the measurement of 1 foot, and can be shown as a new watch face complication or workout metric.
Users with cellular models of Apple Watch SE can complete international calls to emergency services regardless of where the device was originally purchased or if the cellular plan has been activated.
With the Noise app, Apple Watch SE sends a notification if the decibel level of surrounding sound has risen to a point that it could cause damage, and users can check noise levels at any time through the Noise app or Noise watch face complication.
The Watch SE comes with watchOS 7 operating system which includes new features like Family Setup, which allows kids or older family members without an iPhone to enjoy Apple Watch, plus sleep tracking, automatic hand washing detection, and new workouts.
Watch SE and Watch 3 specs and performance
The Apple Watch SE is powered by a S5 System in Package (SiP) and dual-core processor, Apple Watch SE is claimed to be up to two times faster than Apple Watch Series 3. Apple Watch SE features the latest speaker and microphone, which are optimised for better sound quality for phone calls, Siri, and Walkie-Talkie along with Bluetooth 5.0. Both the models are 50m water-resistant and swimproof. There’s an optical heart rate sensor in both along with the Digital Crown. However, there’s no haptic feedback on the Watch 3.
Watch SE vs Watch 3: What’s new
The new Apple Watch SE doesn’t come with an ECG or SpO2 monitor but has the fall detection feature like previous Apple Watch models. It flaunts a Retina display and comes with the same accelerometer, gyroscope, and always-on altimeter as Apple Watch Series 6, and with the latest motion sensors and microphone.
It can be considered as an upgrade to the Apple Watch 3 in terms of design and hardware but it misses out on crucial features that’s there on Apple Watch 4 and 5.
