Apple TV Plus emulates Netflix’s approach by swiftly canceling a highly praised TV series

Apple TV Plus’ comedy series, High Desert, has unfortunately been canceled after just one season. The show, starring Patricia Arquette, premiered on May 17 and was added to the Apple TV Plus catalog. However, after only six weeks, it was discontinued.

Unlike other streaming platforms, Apple TV Plus does not formally announce show cancelations. In this case, Arquette took to Instagram to share the disappointing news with High Desert fans.

High Desert was a comedy-drama that followed the story of Peggy Newman, a former addict who becomes a private investigator after her mother’s death. It premiered with a three-episode debut on May 17 and concluded its eight-episode season on June 21. The cancelation came just 12 days after the season finale aired, setting a potentially record-breaking timeline for a show’s cancellation.

Interestingly, High Desert received a warmer response from audiences than critics, with a 79% approval rating among viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a 70% average critical score. Despite the positive ratings, Apple chose not to renew the show for a second season.

High Desert is not the only Apple TV Plus show to face cancelation after a single season. Other shows like Dear Edward, Amazing Stories, Roar, Mr. Corman, and Shantaram have also been discontinued. While there may be reasons behind these decisions, such as production costs and audience engagement, Apple’s pattern of canceling shows after one season is reminiscent of Netflix’s approach.

Netflix is known for canceling shows that don’t meet expectations or are too expensive. Apple’s decision to follow a similar path raises concerns. However, Apple’s willingness to inform the cast and crew, like in the case of High Desert, sets them apart.

It’s important for Apple to consider its streaming ambitions and userbase. While Apple TV Plus is underrated, it doesn’t have the massive following that Netflix does. If Apple continues to cancel its original series at a similar rate, it risks alienating fans and hindering its streaming goals.
