Apple Passkeys now available for testing on iOS 17 ahead of official launch

Starting from iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, Apple is introducing a new feature called passkeys, which will be automatically assigned to Apple ID owners. Passkeys are a more convenient way of signing into personal accounts, eliminating the need to remember usernames and passwords. Instead, users can simply enter a PIN or use biometric login methods like fingerprints or facial scans. This means that Apple ID credentials will no longer be required to log into Apple websites. The option for passkey login should already be visible on Apple’s website.

If you are interested, you can test the passkey support on the iCloud or AppleID website today. However, you will need to be running the beta versions of iOS 17 or macOS Sonoma on your device. Unfortunately, there is no beta available for iPadOS 17 at the moment. You can find guides on installing the iOS 17 beta on an iPhone and the Sonoma beta on a Mac from TechRadar, but keep in mind that these are early developer betas and may not be stable or optimized. More stable versions are expected to be released in July.

Passkeys will be available on their respective platforms later this year, but an official launch date has not yet been announced. It is anticipated that the release will occur during autumn, likely between September and October.

Regarding the specifics of Apple’s passkey assignment process, there are still unanswered questions. It is unclear whether users will have the option to create their own PINs or if Apple will automatically generate them. Additionally, there is uncertainty about expanding passkey support to other platforms. Currently, passkeys only work on two of Apple’s websites, but it is possible that they may be extended to third-party websites in the future, similar to iOS 16 passkeys.

We have reached out to Apple for clarification on these matters and await their response. If we receive any updates, this story will be revised accordingly.
