The AirTag tracking device, which was released commercially more than two years ago, has not received much attention in Apple’s current product lineup. However, there have been reports about security issues and privacy concerns among users and potential buyers, with many hoping for a solution.
While it remains uncertain if the AirTag stalking problem can be satisfactorily resolved, Apple is reportedly working on a follow-up to the original 2021 edition, which could be released as early as late 2024.
However, this timeline is subject to change, as today’s information about AirTag 2 is not from an official source. Ming-Chi Kuo, a reputable analyst, predicts a mass production start in the fourth quarter of 2024, but this is more of an estimate based on the sales figures of the original AirTag.
Despite not being publicly available, these sales figures are apparently strong enough to justify the development of a second generation.
Since the AirTag 2 is expected to be released in late 2024 or early 2025, it is difficult to make confident predictions about its specific features and improvements compared to the first generation.
Ming-Chi Kuo also suggests that the AirTag 2, along with other devices, will be part of a new spatial computing “ecosystem” centered around the Vision Pro headset. However, the details of this integration are not yet clear.
It is safe to assume that the AirTag 2 will be closely coordinated with the Vision Pro when both products become available to the public.
