Apple is holding up Google’s launch of the Find My Device network

If you’ve been eagerly anticipating the arrival of Google’s Find My Device network, I regret to inform you that the launch has been postponed. Google has made the decision to delay the rollout until Apple implements safeguards for iOS.

In a recent update, Google provided an insight into the current status of the Find My Device network launch. The company has chosen to postpone the rollout until Apple introduces protections for iOS.

Initially, Google had announced that the new tracking network would be available on Android this summer at Google I/O 2023. However, just a week before the expected launch date, Google and Apple jointly proposed an industry specification to prevent unwanted tracking.

This groundbreaking specification ensures that Bluetooth location-tracking devices are compatible with unauthorized tracking detection and alerts across Android and iOS platforms. Prominent brands such as Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security, and Pebblebee have shown their support for this draft specification, which provides manufacturers with best practices and instructions to incorporate these capabilities into their products, if they choose to do so.

Google has not provided a specific date for the Find My Device network launch, but the blog mentions that the joint unwanted tracker alert specification is expected to be finalized by the end of this year.

These delays have already affected the tracker market. Chipolo recently announced the postponement of its Find My Device trackers’ release until “the updated version of Google’s Find My Device app is made available to users worldwide.”
