Apple’s latest — and most affordable — smartphone, the iPhone SE is being assembled in India. In an official statement given to The Times of India-Gadgets Now, Apple said,“iPhone SE packs our most powerful chip into our most popular size at our most affordable price and we’re excited to be making it in India for our local customers.”
Apple iPhone SE was launched on April 15 and comes at a starting price of Rs 42,990, making it the cheapest iPhone one can buy in India. The assembly of the iPhone SE is already underway and the units assembled in India are expected to hit the markets really soon. iPhone SE is being assembled in India by Wistron at its facility in Bengaluru. As of now, Wistron also assembles the iPhone 7 at its facility in Bengaluru. Whether the move of assembling the iPhone SE in India have an impact on the prices, remains to be seen. Considering the fact the festive season is round the corner and the iPhone SE is now being assembled in India, customers in India can expect to snag it at lesser prices.
Apart from Wistron, another Apple manufacturers Foxconn has an assembling unit in Chennai, where two of the most popular iPhones in the world are assembled. Both the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 have topped the selling charts across the world and are now being assembled in India.
Apple started assembling phones in India in 2017 when the original SE was assembled by Wistron. A year later in 2018, the then hugely-popular iPhone 6s was also assembled by Wistron in Bengaluru. However, the assembly of both these iPhone was discontinued sometime last year.
Meanwhile, the new iPhone SE is Apple’s answer to affordable premium smartphones in India. The iPhone SE packs in the latest A13 Bionic processor — powers the latest and expensive iPhone 11 series as well — and brings back the design seen in iPhone 8 and earlier models. Apple’s intent behind the iPhone SE is to give consumers an affordable option in a space where Android players like OnePlus, Samsung and others have been making a play for a long time now.
