apple: Apple and Google “need to be stopped”: Epic Games CEO

0

Epic Games has been in the eye of the storm ever since it dragged Apple to court after the Cupertino-based tech giant removed Fortnite from the App Store due to an alleged violation of its policies. Google was next to be sued. Epic Games is strongly opposed to the 30% fee charged by both the companies from the app developers on their respective app stores.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney recently spoke to NPR in an interview where he said, “It’s not just Epic being exploited by Apple, but it’s every developer who goes along with that scheme colluding with Apple and Google to further their monopoly. These stores are making a lot more money from creative works than the creators.”
The tech giants have been charging this fee for a while now and as per the report, Spotify and Epic Games have tried to rally the app developers around the world to its side.
The CEO further added: “It’s not that Epic looked at articles about investigations of these companies and decided that now’s the time to act. It’s the same bad behavior by Apple and Google that’s driving everybody to the common conclusion that these monopolies need to be stopped,” Sweeney said.
As per the CEO, the 30% charge on new technologies in the future “can stifle innovation.” He is of the opinion that with Apple and Google eventually controlling everything in the future, “it’s going to be one of the worst dystopias you can imagine from the science fiction literature.”
As a mark of protest, Epic Games earlier announced a FreeFortnite Cup. The winners were eligible for Android devices like phones and tablets, but no Apple devices. While Android players of Fortnite won’t be affected, the tug-of-war of Epic with Apple is on. Right now, Epic Games has said that Apple has given an “indefinite extension” to “Sign In With Apple” option for Fortnite players who want to use their Apple IDs to log-in.
