API changes causing app shutdowns like Apollo are not relenting, according to Reddit.

The CEO of Reddit, Steve Huffman, has started an AMA to address the controversy surrounding the platform’s API changes. However, based on his initial message and some replies, it appears that Reddit will not be backing down on the potentially costly API updates that have caused several developers to announce they will be shutting down their apps. Huffman stated, “Reddit needs to be a self-sustaining business, and to do that, we can no longer subsidize commercial entities that require large-scale data use.”

The changes have caused outrage among Redditors with major communities, including some of the most followed on the platform, announcing that they will be going dark from June 12th to June 14th to protest the threat to third-party apps. Although Reddit has given minor concessions, such as exempting accessibility-focused apps necessary to browse the site from the pricing updates.

During the AMA, Huffman seemed to indicate that Reddit would not be making amends with the apps that are closing their doors. This statement has been met with criticism from developers who claim they have been ignored by Reddit.

Concerns were also raised about Reddit being increasingly profit-driven. To which Huffman replied, “We’ll continue to be profit-driven until profits arrive.” The AMA is ongoing, and updates are expected to be provided.
