The company has already confirmed it’s “testing capabilities in the Apple CarPlay system,” but the app isn’t yet ready for prime time. Some users who installed the app on their mobile devices claim it also appeared on CarPlay, but when they launch it, it hits an error telling them that the vehicle integration isn’t yet finalized.
Chick-fil-A has remained tight-lipped on the functionality it plans for the CarPlay app, but it’s safe to assume it’ll sport features similar to the ones integrated into Domino’s software. Users will probably be able to see previous orders, resend them, and possibly pay from the CarPlay screen with payment information stored on the mobile device.
Ordering food from the car appears to be the next big thing in the Android Auto and CarPlay world, albeit developers must find a way to deal with the obvious limitations enforced by the risk of causing distractions behind the wheel. The functionality is limited on Android Auto and CarPlay, but users can still browse their previous orders and resend them for curbside pickup. It’s an easy way to send an order when you drive home from work, so you don’t have to unlock your mobile device for a simple task.
Apple and Google have been working around the clock on unlocking new app categories in Android Auto and CarPlay, and I expect more big news on this front at the upcoming I/O and WWDC developer events. Apple is also working around the clock on finalizing the next-generation CarPlay experience, which should debut later this year on Aston Martin and Porsche models.
Compared to the current CarPlay version, the upcoming upgrade will offer more advanced functionality, including deeper vehicle integration and support for all screens on the dashboard. It’s unclear if it’ll get access to more app categories, but Apple is committed to maintaining the existing version.
Meanwhile, Google is also investing big in Android Automotive, its embedded OS that allows apps to access more vehicle data. Food ordering apps aren’t yet available on AAOS, but it’s probably a matter of time until Google opens up the system to more developers, especially as it plans to increase the number of apps in the store.
