The latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, Fast X, delighted audiences with the return of classic characters and the introduction of new ones, including Isabel Neves, played by Daniela Melchior. In an interview with Collider, Melchior discussed her approach to building the character of Isabel, who is revealed to be the sister of Elena Neves (Elsa Pataky) and is introduced to the story after her sister’s death at the hands of Cipher (Charlize Theron) in The Fate of the Furious.
Melchior’s process involved imagining Isabel’s backstory and relationship with her sister, as well as her ties to new villain Dante (Jason Momoa). Even though the movie does not explain how Isabel and Dante know each other, Melchior speculated that Isabel may have worked for Dante, at least in drug smuggling. While Isabel’s skills as a racer are highlighted, Melchior envisioned her as a person who has hit rock bottom and “done a lot of wrong things, even for Dante or just to survive” in her free time.
Melchior’s character development was aided by frequent exchanges with franchise producer and star Vin Diesel. Through these conversations, Melchior concluded that Isabel is haunted by terrible events in her past and believes that everything she touches will rot, leading her to avoid connections and keep everyone at arm’s length.
If given the opportunity to return as Isabel in future installments, Melchior hopes to delve into the character’s darker aspects. Fast X arrives on digital streaming platforms later this week.
