Having realized just in time that his ventures into expensive blockbusters like Avatar: The Last Airbender and After Earth were destined to fail due to their overwhelming mediocrity and lack of profitability, the writer and director has instead chosen to reinvent himself as a creator of unique genre films that don’t break the bank, but always manage to make a profit.
In line with this approach, Knock at the Cabin exceeded its modest $20 million budget, earning almost three times that amount at the box office. However, it proved to be just as divisive as one would expect from Shyamalan’s take on the end of the world through an intimate and confined family drama.
Some viewers loved it, others detested it with fervor, and then there were those who were indifferent. However, considering that FlixPatrol has declared this loosely adapted literary work as the top-viewed movie among subscribers in the United States, we can certainly infer which demographic has been showing the most interest in Knock at the Cabin.
If you’re expecting widespread destruction, then this film may not be for you. However, Shyamalan’s smaller-scale exploration of the end of the world is intriguing enough to warrant giving it a chance if you’re on the fence.
