Danny McBride has proven himself to be an evolving force in HBO comedy over the course of fifteen years and three different series. Co-created with Ben Best and Jody Hill, Eastbound & Down introduced us to the former baseball pitcher and con-man Kenny Powers, with the show hitting its stride in its fourth and final season. Vice Principals, also co-created with Hill, was purposefully crafted as a two-season series but showcased McBride’s vision and scope. With The Righteous Gemstones, McBride has given us his magnum opus, a sprawling, absurd, ambitious, and brilliant comedy, which has only gotten better over three seasons and promises to be longer than anything he’s ever done before.
The Gemstone family is seemingly thriving in the third season, with their own vacation resort, Eli Gemstone’s (John Goodman) retirement, and the three Gemstone kids taking over the church. However, trouble brews as the church questions the new leadership and the appearance of Eli’s sister May-May Montgomery (Kristen Johnston), who’s worried about her sons and their extremist and religious militia leader father, Peter (Steve Zahn). The Montgomery and Gemstone families’ contentious relationship reaches new heights in a clash that promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
The Righteous Gemstones stands out as McBride’s best show yet, deftly balancing absurdity with genuinely touching emotion. Season 3 delivers some of the most insane moments in TV show history, with more male frontal nudity than expected—even for HBO. The show’s unique ability to elicit deep emotion from its audience is a testament to its excellence, with complex characters like Judy Gemstone (Edi Patterson) and her husband BJ (Tim Baltz) leading the charge. The show’s MVP, Walton Goggins, delivers an unforgettable performance as Baby Billy, stealing every scene he’s in.
Season 3 also perfectly expands the Gemstone family, opening up new possibilities to be explored. The show deftly manages to develop characters that could have been complete nut-jobs, like Peter, into sympathetic and tragic individuals. The introduction of the Montgomery family offers many opportunities to grow this family tree, making it an exciting prospect for future seasons.
Overall, The Righteous Gemstones Season 3 stands out as one of the best comedies on television. McBride’s unique brand of humor is both poignant and entertaining, tackling weighty issues like the cost of wealth, the destructive power of choices, and the strength of faith. This excellent season improves an already-excellent show and keeps us hoping for more ingenious storytelling from McBride for years to come.
