Alienware’s new Aurora R16 desktop sheds gobs of plastic for a 40 percent smaller build

Alienware, a renowned brand in the world of prebuilt desktop PCs, has taken customer feedback to heart and made significant improvements to its Aurora desktop PC. The new Alienware Aurora R16 is laser-focused on addressing the cooling issues of its predecessor, to the extent that the company has decided to veer away from its iconic, otherworldly design.

Although the new Aurora R16 retains the same basic steel chassis and 25.2 liters of internal space for components, its new boxy design eliminates several pounds of plastic, resulting in a 40% reduction in overall volume. The computer now measures only 36 liters, compared to its predecessor’s 60.7 liters. This reduction in plastic was primarily aimed at improving airflow, as explained by Alienware representatives.

The result of these design changes is impressive: CPU temperatures are now up to 10% lower, GPU temperatures are up to 6% lower, and the system as a whole operates 20% more quietly than before. Eddy Goyanes, an experienced member of the Alienware team, claims that the Aurora R16 is the quietest desktop computer ever produced by the company.

To enhance airflow, the Aurora R16 employs a new cooling system called the “Stadium Loop.” This system consists of large looped vents on both sides of the front of the computer, which draw air into the rig through a single 120mm intake fan. The loop’s window-side features 44 distinct LEDs for decorative lighting, forming one of three RGB LED zones within the PC. Additionally, the chassis is equipped with hexagonal vents on the side, which likely intake air from the front and exhaust it through the rear, depending on the GPU configuration.

The Aurora R16 comes with several notable features as standard: Intel AX210 Wi-Fi 6E, a 500W 80+ Platinum power supply with 12-phase voltage regulation, two memory slots, and two M.2 SSD slots for up to 64GB of DDR5-5600 RAM and up to 8TB of PCIe Gen 4 storage. The chassis also accommodates a 3.5mm spinning hard drive, and a more powerful 1000W 80+ Platinum power supply is available as an option.

In terms of connectivity, the 33.8-pound chassis offers a range of ports. On the front, there is a USB-C port with a speed of 10Gbps, three USB-A ports with speeds of 5Gbps, a 3.5mm headset jack, and additional ports can be found at the rear, including a 20Gbps USB-C port, a 10Gbps USB-C port, two USB-A ports with speeds of 5Gbps, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, 2.5Gbps ethernet, and various audio output options.

The Alienware Aurora R16 is available for purchase starting at $1,750 in the United States ($2,300 CAD in Canada), and it comes with an air-cooled Core i7 13700F processor and Nvidia RTX 4070 graphics. For customers in Asia and Europe, there is the option to start with an RTX 3050 or upgrade to an RTX 4080. In the United States, the only other GPU option currently available is the RTX 4070 Ti, with additional options expected later in the year. The R16 offers an alternative processor, the 13th Gen i9 13900F, and Alienware plans to make it their most powerful desktop by the end of the year.

However, one area where the new model falls short is upgradability. The power supply and Z690 motherboard are still proprietary, due to the company’s decision to prioritize other factors and time constraints. Matt McGowan, the lead at Alienware, explains that it was more efficient to iterate on the existing architecture than to undergo a complete redesign. While future models may incorporate upgradability, the company cannot make any promises at this time. As for an AMD version of the R16, Alienware is considering it for their future roadmap but has no comment on it presently.
