Google is currently beta testing an enhanced version of the Pixel Call Screen that incorporates conversational AI to assist users in dealing with irritating robocalls.
If you’re not familiar with this feature, Call Screen provides Pixel phone owners with a direct method for evaluating phone calls from unfamiliar sources. For example, you can automatically reject calls from numbers listed in Google’s spam database. With this beta version, Google is incorporating a “series” of voice prompts that sound natural to “determine who’s calling and why.” The aim, according to Google, is to further reduce the number of robocalls received by Pixel users.
Surprisingly, the beta version was actually released nearly two months ago on May 15. For whatever reason, Google has kept it relatively quiet. It’s important to note that this is a work in progress, so it may not function as intended. We are still in the early stages. As a result, the tech giant is seeking feedback from early adopters for improving the AI.
The company appears to be focused on perfecting the natural-sounding voice. Once they gather feedback, Google plans to incorporate those changes into the final version whenever it is released. The launch date for the AI-powered Call Screen is currently unknown, but we have requested more information.
Availability and Feedback
In addition to the AI voices, Google is streamlining the Call Screen user interface. Now, after selecting the Protection Level in the Settings menu, a new window will appear, providing more precise control over call filtering. There are three levels to choose from: Basic instantly declines known spam numbers, Medium limits “suspicious calls,” and Maximum outright blocks all unknown numbers.
The beta version is currently available for recent Pixel models, such as the Pixel 6 and newer, but only in the United States. Google has provided a list of instructions on its Help website to guide users through the installation of this AI-boosted feature. Essentially, users need to download the latest version of the Phone app and access the Call Screen section in the Settings menu. The voices will be automatically included in the screening process.
Hopefully, Google will succeed in curbing the spam. It has become a significant issue in recent years. To provide some context, a recent study reveals that in 2022 alone, 75 billion robocalls and 225 billion robotexts were sent.
For those seeking a more creative approach to filter out spam, Jolly Roger Telephone is worth exploring. It is an AI subscription service that utilizes ChatGPT technology to “engage in ridiculous conversations with scammers.” Afterward, if you are considering an upgrade, be sure to check out TechRadar’s list of the Pixel phones for 2023.
