AI “doesn’t allow” for “creativity” says Baldur’s Gate 3 voice actor

During an interview with TRG on July 27th, voice actors Devora Wilde and Jennifer English, who play characters in the game Baldur’s Gate 3, discussed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in games as a replacement for human actors. Wilde addressed the ongoing SAG-AFRA and Writers Guild of America strikes and the concerns raised by the union regarding the potential for AI to replace human actors. She acknowledged these concerns, stating, “I think we’re all kind of worried about the issues that are being brought up by the strikes, and rightly so.”

However, Wilde expressed confidence that AI cannot replicate the breadth and depth of emotional performances delivered by human actors. She emphasized, “We bring something human to these characters.”

English also chimed in, noting that AI lacks the ability for creativity, conversation, and the generation of new ideas that come from human collaboration.

While Wilde feels that AI technology has not yet reached the level of replicating the range and capabilities of human actors, she expressed concern about the potential future development of AI that can mimic human emotions, stating, “We would be very upset if it did get to that stage.”

English shared her worries about AI potentially taking over human jobs, stating, “I’m not worried about it stealing my [job]. Well, no, I am.”

While AI could offer significant benefits as a tool, it poses challenges for actors. Currently, actors are discovering their likenesses scanned and reused without permission, and their voices recreated with AI for use in modifications. Without regulation, this technology’s proliferation will undoubtedly have a negative impact on actors’ livelihoods worldwide. Government intervention through proper regulation is necessary to transform AI from a threat to a helpful tool. The UK government has introduced an AI regulation Bill, but its effectiveness in implementing suitable protections industry-wide remains uncertain.
