After Fertility Treatment, One in Five Women Successfully Conceive Naturally

Around 20% of women who have undergone fertility treatment, such as IVF, are able to conceive naturally after having a baby, according to new research.

A comprehensive review of previous studies has revealed that within three years, one in five women who underwent assisted conception for their first child were able to achieve natural pregnancy.

These findings, published in the journal Human Reproduction, challenge the widely held belief that natural pregnancy after IVF is rare.

Dr Annette Thwaites, the lead author from University College London’s EGA Institute for Women’s Health, stated, “Our findings suggest that natural pregnancy after having a baby by IVF is far more common than previously thought. This contrasts with the commonly expressed view that it is highly unlikely.”

The study analyzed data from 11 studies involving over 5,000 women worldwide between the years 1980 and 2021, including 1,160 women from the UK.

“Knowing what is possible would empower women to plan their families and make informed choices regarding further fertility treatment and/or contraception.” – Dr Annette Thwaites

The research also involved a report by Dr Thwaites that included interviews with 22 UK women who experienced natural pregnancy after fertility treatment.

The study revealed that a majority of participants had subfertility, meaning it took them longer than expected to conceive.

This suggests that not all women undergoing fertility treatment are permanently infertile.

A small number of participants underwent IVF for reasons unrelated to infertility, such as same-sex relationships, single parenting, or surrogacy.

With over 10 million babies born worldwide through IVF, it is crucial for those who have undergone successful treatment to understand the likelihood of natural conception afterwards.

Dr Thwaites emphasizes, “Knowing what is possible would empower women to plan their families and make informed choices regarding further fertility treatment and/or contraception.”
