Advantech announced on the 27th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Safion, a domestic AI semiconductor startup, on the 23rd to develop and mass-produce the edge AI box system. Through this agreement, the two companies will proceed with the development of prototype technology for the edge AI box system.

The two companies were previously selected to support ‘COMPASS’, a project to support the production of prototypes of system semiconductors. Through continuous cooperation, the system is expected to be mainly applied to defense and intelligent transportation (ITS), and it is also seeking to expand into new fields.

Advantech is a company based in Taiwan. It is known in the industry through industrial AIoT hardware solutions, and with the recent increase in interest in edge AI technology, Advantech’s long-standing know-how in building an edge computing environment is drawing attention. In addition, domestic interest in edge AI applications such as smart transportation, smart manufacturing, and smart logistics developed by Advantech is also increasing.

Safion is an AI semiconductor fabless (semiconductor consignment production) company jointly invested by the three SK ICT associations (SK Telecom, SK Hynix, and SK Square), and has been developing domestic AI semiconductors that are essential to cope with the rapidly increasing demand for AI since its establishment in 2022. Last year, it successfully launched a semiconductor “X330” with low power and high efficiency computing performance, and attracted 60 billion won worth of investment in Series A, recognizing its technology.

Choi Soo-hyuk, managing director of Advanced Industrial IoT, said, “Through this agreement with Sapion, we will be with a strong partner in the edge AI field, which is the main field of Advantech. We will continue to expand the domestic edge AI ecosystem through the excellent technology and cooperation of both companies.”
