Outlander has captivated audiences with its time-traveling storyline and epic romance. The show follows the Scottish warrior James Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and his love affair with Claire, a British nurse from World War II who has been transported back to 18th century Scotland. While Jamie may seem like the perfect husband, he harbors a secret – he has a son. Claire is aware of this hidden truth.
The son, William Ransom (played by Charles Vandervaart), was raised by Jamie’s close friend Lord John Grey (David Berry). William is described as a “courteous aristocrat with a Highlander’s fire simmering beneath the surface.” According to Vandervaart, the character undergoes significant changes throughout the upcoming season. Initially naive and romanticizing war, William will learn some harsh realities as the American Revolutionary War unfolds. These experiences will shape him into a better person.
Living a sheltered life in an English mansion, William’s privileged upbringing has shielded him from the horrors of the real world. However, his illusions will be shattered as he confronts the realities of war. Vandervaart explains that William’s journey will not go as planned, forcing him to mature and confront the challenges that lie ahead.
In addition to the tensions between William and war, there will also be conflicts between him and his father, Jamie. Lord John Grey, concerned for William’s safety, discourages him from joining the war. However, William desires to experience the world on his own. Despite their disagreements, there is an underlying love between father and son, as Jamie has been there for William throughout his life. Ultimately, their bond will endure these tensions.
