There are rumors circulating online that characters from the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse may make an appearance in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie. However, if the filmmakers stick to the source material, this may not bode well for Miles Morales’ universe.
Comic book fans who have read 2015’s Secret Wars, a crossover event by writer Jonathan Hickman, are already talking about it. The story of Secret Wars involves a group of heroes and villains who escape their own universes’ destruction and meet on a planet ruled by Dr. Doom called Battleworld. Miles Morales is among them, and he teams up with Peter Parker to discover the source of Doom’s power. This turns out to be a character called Molecule Man, who is channeling the energy of a group of superbeings, which he feeds to Doom.
However, Molecule Man is really hungry after serving as a battery for Doom. Miles, who has a burger somehow stuffed in his suit, gives it to the very thankful mutant. Some worlds are brought back to existence by the end of the story, but Miles’ universe is not one of them. Despite this, Molecule Man chooses to save Miles and incorporates him into the main Marvel universe because of his act of kindness. Some people connected to Miles are able to come along, but essentially, Miles’ own world is gone forever.
If Miles is indeed in Secret Wars, it remains to be seen whether Marvel will use the original comic’s story of Miles’ salvation, involving the burger, or come up with an entirely new rationale.
