A recent study has shown that curiosity can help in reducing feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. According to lead author and psychologist William Whitecross, curiosity is unique in the sense that it can lead to two different outcomes. On one hand, it can create a love for the unknown that drives a person to solve mysteries and answer questions. On the other hand, it can also create an intolerance for the unknown, which drives a person to avoid or fear what they don’t understand.
The study further highlights that there are two types of curiosity:
- Interest-curiosity – Curiosity that is driven by the desire to learn and derive pleasure from it, which leads to a sense of wonder, fascination or intrigue
- Deprivation-curiosity – Curiosity borne out of the desire to reduce negative emotions that stem from ignorance and incomprehension. This leads to feelings of annoyance and discomfort due to the inability to answer questions.
Results from an online survey conducted by Whitecross and his team suggest that Interest-curiosity is linked to more positive attitudes towards uncertainty, while Deprivation-curiosity is linked to negative attitudes towards it. However, Dr Whitecross advises that neither form of curiosity is superior or inferior to the other, and that each serves a unique purpose. He urges individuals to tap into their Interest-curiosity and embrace the thrill of not knowing, allowing it to kindle optimism and positive speculation.
In conclusion, the study reveals that Curiosity can assist in turning uncertainty from a scary experience to a pleasurable problem-solving exercise. By embracing the challenge and focusing on the enjoyment of uncovering a new solution, individuals are able to overcome their unease and approach learning in a more positive manner.
