‘Good Omens’ Production Designer on How the Record Shop Came to Life

The Big Picture

  • Good Omens Season 2 introduces new locations alongside familiar ones, including a retro record shop.
  • The production design team paid meticulous attention to the record shop’s interior.
  • The lead graphics designer crafted 80 fictional bands with album covers and songs, adding humor and distinctive details to the setting.

Good Omens made its highly anticipated return for Season 2 in July, reuniting viewers with Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and Crowley (David Tennant) as they embark on a divine new mystery. While time has passed within the series, many of the beloved settings from Season 1 make a reappearance, such as Aziraphale’s iconic bookshop. In Season 2, the spotlight also shines on new locations, including a record shop owned by Maggie (Maggie Service). Although the shop’s interior isn’t central to the story, the production design team lavished it with equal care and attention.

In an interview with Collider’s Maggie Boccella, Good Omens production designer Michael Ralph shared insights into the process of crafting the record shop’s interior. Ralph emphasized that his primary goal was to create a vibrant and detailed space. To achieve a retro aesthetic, he drew inspiration from real-life shops and various visual references.

“[I]t’s something that had been there a long time, something that used to be popular in the ’70s and ’60s but has somehow slipped in its popularity but still hangs on into old Soho. I did a lot of research on what I love about those shops, and a lot of pictorial and imagery, before I settled on what I thought would work character-wise.”

Once Ralph established the overall vision for the record shop, he entrusted Micaela Ralph, the lead graphics designer, with creative freedom to bring the interior to life. He told her, “Okay, this is your world. What can you do with it?” Micaela’s dedication paid off, resulting in a shop filled to the brim with records, posters, and memorabilia that authentically complemented Maggie’s character. Since obtaining copyright clearance proved challenging, Micaela went the extra mile and designed 80 fictional bands complete with album covers and songs, adding an abundance of humor to the space. Ralph praised Micaela and the entire graphics department for their exceptional work and the unique touches they contributed:

“Goodness me, if you could just get into some of those album covers and read some of those songs, it is hilarious, and they all followed weird themes. Then I gave it to the graphics department to dress. So, they actually came down off their tables and desks and went in there and had a hoop and holler in there for two or three days and papered up all of their made-up graphics posters and events and record covers. It was such great fun. The inclusivity of everyone’s input was what gave that such character and heart.”
