WhatsApp beta testing new 32-person voice chat feature

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow up to 32 people to participate in a voice chat. This exciting news comes as the latest beta version is being released to Android users.

The upcoming feature, similar to Slack’s Huddles and Discord chats, was discovered by WABetaInfo in the beta version 2.23.16.19 release notes. It will enable a group of individuals to engage in a voice chat and have conversations with one another.

Users who have access to the new voice chat feature will notice a waveform icon in their group chats. Tapping this icon will immediately launch a voice chat with its own user interface.

Unlike traditional phone calls that ring each member’s phone, the voice chat feature is designed to be unobtrusive. Instead of ringing, users will receive a silent push notification. Individuals can join or leave the voice chat at their convenience. If all participants leave the chat, it will automatically end after an hour. However, a new voice chat can be started at any time.

Similar to other WhatsApp chats, this feature ensures end-to-end encryption to protect the privacy of voice chats. Only participants in the call can listen in.

To test out this new feature, users must install the latest WhatsApp beta version from the Google Play Store. The update will be rolled out to users in the following days, and a wider release may be expected in the near future.
