In Samsung’s backyard, young kids are switching from Android to iPhone

A recent report reveals a fascinating trend among South Korean youngsters under the age of 30. Despite living in the home turf of Android giant Samsung, these individuals are ditching their Android devices and opting for iPhones instead. Counterpoint Research’s survey indicates that a staggering 85% of South Koreans initially purchased an Android smartphone. However, 53% of them have now switched to using an iPhone. Furthermore, an impressive 92% of those who started with an iPhone continue to be loyal to the brand.
The report also highlights the strong support for local companies like Samsung and LG, even though LG recently exited the smartphone market. Counterpoint Research interviewed 1,000 South Koreans during the first half of this year and discovered that many young people under the age of 30 initially chose Android devices due to the preference of those with purchasing power, such as parents.

Curiously, when asked why they initially chose an Android device as their first smartphone, the most common response among survey participants was “recommendation from family or friends.” So, what prompted these youngsters to switch from Android to iPhone? The top reasons cited were “performance” (32%) and “brand image” (31%). In particular, the iPhone’s cameras greatly influenced the satisfaction and expectations of these young Korean consumers.

Let’s not forget the 92% of South Koreans who purchased an iPhone as their first phone and still possess one today. An astonishing 76% of them expressed unwillingness to use an Android phone in the future, with 52% attributing their decision to the design of Android devices and 29% to performance issues.

Examining all age groups in South Korea, over half of those who switched from iPhone to Android mentioned that they were enticed by easy-to-use features like Samsung Pay and the user interface (UI). Strikingly, these same reasons were cited by iPhone users who indicated a willingness to switch to an Android device in the future. Counterpoint Research suggests that Android manufacturers should focus on highlighting user convenience in their television advertisements.
