Leading technology companies, including Apple, Adobe, Nvidia, Autodesk, and animation studio Pixar, have formed an alliance known as the Alliance of OpenUSD. Their goal is to standardize 3D tools and data using Pixar’s Open Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD) platform, in collaboration with the Linux Foundation affiliate Joint Development Foundation. This move aims to make 3D content production more accessible for developers and content creators, enabling them to create large-scale 3D projects and expand the range of 3D-enabled products and services.
OpenUSD, developed by Pixar, is an open-source interchange package for working on scenes composed of various elements in the graphics pipeline, such as 3D modeling, lighting, and shading. While it has primarily been used in Pixar’s animated output, Apple sees the potential for broader applications, particularly in its recently unveiled AR/VR headset, Vision Pro.
Apple’s Vice President of the Vision Products Group, Mike Rockwell, believes that OpenUSD will accelerate the development of AR experiences and spatial computing applications. Similarly, Autodesk’s Gordon Bradley sees the value of making OpenUSD the international standard for content creators working on CG worlds, digital twins, and the future of the 3D web.
The Alliance’s formation has received positive feedback from companies like Unity, Epic Games, Ikea, and Unity Wētā Tools, as reported on the Linux Foundation website.
Interestingly, Apple’s Alliance announcement did not mention the term “metaverse,” leaving room for speculation on their intentions.
