The Importance of Reading ‘Heir to the Empire’ Prior to the Release of ‘Ahsoka’

Star Wars boasts an impressive lineup of villains, including iconic names like Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. However, even these characters pale in comparison to the upcoming live-action debut of Grand Admiral Thrawn in the Ahsoka series. While Timothy Zahn’s highly acclaimed Star Wars books, which introduced Thrawn, are no longer considered canon by Disney, Dave Filoni couldn’t resist bringing back this beloved character. Thrawn made a triumphant return in Star Wars Rebels, capturing the same intriguing aspects that made him a compelling villain in the original books.

Now, with Ahsoka set to continue the story after the animated series, it’s no surprise that Thrawn will once again serve as the ultimate antagonist. Thrawn stands apart from other villains in his own league. Dave Filoni knows exactly how to showcase the real terror Thrawn poses to the fragile New Republic. However, it’s impossible not to think about the incredible moments Thrawn had in Zahn’s books, such as “Heir to the Empire,” “Dark Force Rising,” and “The Last Command.”

Compared to the Thrawn in the Disney timeline, the character in Zahn’s books was even more fascinating as he faced a much more formidable adversary. “Heir to the Empire” takes place after the Battle of Endor and features the return of beloved Star Wars heroes like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa. The story introduces a new threat, the so-called heir to the Empire, who puts everything that our characters fought for in the original trilogy at risk. While the scale of the Thrawn trilogy may differ from what we’ll see in Ahsoka, it is precisely why it’s worth picking up these books if you haven’t already.

Imagine if the sequel films had ventured into an original story set after “Return of the Jedi” without the First Order or new characters. It would have allowed Luke, Han, Chewie, Leia, and Lando to continue their journey with new conflicts, threats, and political schemes. Instead, Thrawn, with his depth as a villain, could have been the one to challenge them and potentially resurrect the Empire, while exposing Palpatine’s failures. “Heir to the Empire” offers precisely what this alternative scenario would have looked like. The narrative explores Luke’s struggle as a mentor to Leia, his contemplation of establishing a new Jedi Order, Leia’s pregnancy with Force-sensitive twins, and the continued charisma of Han Solo.

Although currently considered non-canon, even George Lucas acknowledged that Timothy Zahn did an excellent job of writing a sequel to “Return of the Jedi.” In fact, elements from Zahn’s books, like the name “Coruscant” and characters like Mara Jade, have made their way into the Star Wars universe. As fans eagerly await projects like Ahsoka, it’s undeniable that none of these new endeavors can quite capture the nostalgic feeling of watching Luke, Leia, and Han’s adventures.

Yet, Timothy Zahn manages to recreate that feeling with his Thrawn trilogy. Each character, including Mara Jade, outshines the entirety of the sequel trilogy’s cast, making the Thrawn trilogy a must-read. It delivers the adventure, intrigue, and strategic elements expected from a classic Star Wars story. If you yearn for what could have been, had the creative decisions been different, “Heir to the Empire” is the perfect consolation prize.

To truly grasp the genius of Thrawn, one of Star Wars’ greatest villains, reading “Heir to the Empire” is essential. While Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau may have crafted a compelling version of Thrawn for Ahsoka, no one understands the character better than his original creator, Timothy Zahn. Thrawn is a practical strategist who learns from his mistakes and values understanding the enemy’s psyche. His vast knowledge of different races and his unique approach of studying their culture and art make him stand out among Hollywood villains. Therefore, reading the origins of this character who nearly brought the New Republic to its knees will allow you to connect with him on a deeper level when he appears in Ahsoka. This is especially crucial as Thrawn is not simply another overused super weapon, but a multi-dimensional character who challenges our heroes in unprecedented ways.
