The Tarountula Illustration Rare from Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet base is connected to the Spidops ex Rare Illustration Rare.

The Scarlet & Violet era of the Pokémon TCG has commenced. With the official conclusion of Sword & Shield, the Scarlet & Violet era began in March 2023, focusing on the ninth generation of Pokémon games and the new region: Paldea. The first set of this era, the Scarlet & Violet base set, was released in the United States on March 31st, 2023, bringing significant and lasting changes to the hobby. The card borders now have a silver color, matching the Japanese releases. Additionally, each pack now guarantees at least one holo-rare and two reverse holos. The lowercase “ex” mechanic is a prominent feature in this era, showcasing a double holographic pattern with a horizontal shine and starry sparkle. Full Art ex cards now feature a green, foil outline around the Pokémon. Moving forward, the Secret Rare section of expansions will include Full Arts, Illustration Rares, Special Illustration Rare exs, Full Art Trainers, Special Illustration Rare Trainers, and Gold Hyper Rares. In this spotlight on the Scarlet & Violet base set, we’ll take a closer look at:

This Tarountula Illustration Rare is part of a two-card connecting piece of art that should be paired with its evolution, Spidops ex, which is placed directly above it. In this image, Tarountula is depicted in a state of distress, sweating profusely as a Scyther looms over it, seemingly ready to cut its connecting thread. Let’s show some support for this anxious Tarountula by exploring its Dex entries:

The ball of threads wrapped around its body is elastic enough to deflect the scythes of Scyther, this Pokémon’s natural enemy.

The thread it secretes from its rear is as strong as wire. The secret behind the thread’s strength is the subject of ongoing research.

This card and the Spidops ex Special Art Rare are beautifully illustrated by Miki Tanaka, a prominent contributor to the Pokémon TCG since the vintage era, with her first credit appearing in the Fossil set.

Stay tuned for more highlights from the special set as we continue to showcase the cards and artwork of Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet. In our next installment, we’ll delve into the main section of the set. For more information on this iconic trading card game, visit Bleeding Cool.
