$155 million US opening for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie shatters records

Over the weekend, movie theaters were flooded with fans of Barbie-core and biopics as they flocked to witness the “Barbenheimer” box office phenomenon. Amongst the many performances, Greta Gerwig’s rendition of Barbie emerged victorious, shattering records and earning a staggering $155 million domestically in just a few days. This remarkable achievement makes it the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film directed by a woman, surpassing the previous record set by Anna Boden’s “Captain Marvel.”

Jeff Goldstein, the president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, expressed his elation, stating, “The massive, overwhelming response we’ve seen out there proves what we’ve known from the beginning: that ‘Barbie’ is not only an incredibly special film, but clearly the theatrical event of the summer, if not the year. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of it and congratulate everyone involved in this brilliant labor of love.”

It’s worth noting that the “Barbenheimer” combo, comprised of the film “Barbie” and its success at the box office, stands as the largest blockbuster opening in the United States that is not driven by a Disney intellectual property. This distinction is significant and showcases the immense popularity of the movie.

In addition to its triumph in the domestic market, “Barbie” also outperformed “The Super Mario Bros Movie” as the highest-grossing domestic opening for 2023, earning a combined worldwide box office revenue of $337 million. However, it was not the only standout film of the weekend. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” exceeded industry expectations, generating $174.2 million globally, with approximately $80.5 million coming from the domestic market.

According to AVClub, the combined success of “Barbenheimer” contributed to the fourth-biggest box office weekend in US history, an achievement noteworthy for not being driven by Disney franchises like “Star Wars” or “Marvel.”

Furthermore, “Oppenheimer” itself broke records, emerging as the biopic with the biggest global opening day and weekend, surpassing the achievements of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It also marked Christopher Nolan’s third-highest-grossing opening weekend in both domestic and global markets, solidifying its place among his non-superhero films.

These figures unequivocally demonstrate the genuine hype surrounding “Barbenheimer.” What initially began as a playful joke evolved into an internet phenomenon, captivating moviegoers who actively chose to support both movies. Instead of pitting them against each other in a “boys vs girls” contest, viewers embraced the celebration of cinema without the involvement of a multiversal superhero movie or yet another sequel. This unity and appreciation for diverse films is a heartening sight in the industry.
