The Original Train Sequence in Impossible 7 Was 90 Minutes in Length

One of the most awe-inspiring action sequences in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” featured Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise) and Grace (played by Hayley Atwell) maneuvering through a collapsing train. Surprisingly, this sequence was originally intended to be as long as a short movie, potentially extending the sequel’s runtime to nearly four hours. In a recent interview with Variety, Eddie Hamilton, the editor who worked on the film for months, explained the process of condensing the sequence:

“The train sequence was initially about an hour and a half long. We managed to trim it down to around 50 minutes in the final cut.”

The scene in which Ethan Hunt reaches the train in Christopher McQuarrie’s film is directly tied to the movie’s climax. After chasing a world-altering artifact throughout the film, Hunt receives information that Alanna Mistopolis (played by Vanessa Kirby) will be transporting it on the train. However, tight security prevents Hunt from boarding. Nevertheless, Hunt always finds a solution to reach his target, and this time, his unconventional methods lead to a jaw-dropping stunt that was performed six times to capture the perfect shot.

Hunt drives a motorcycle off a cliff, using a parachute to land on the moving train—a death-defying feat performed by Cruise himself multiple times during filming. Upon reaching the train, Hunt must wait for the opportune moment to enter, retrieve the device, and escape before Alanna’s henchmen can kill him. Unfortunately, Gabriel (played by Esai Morales) is already two steps ahead, causing the rails to explode, sending the train hurtling into a river. Hunt and Grace find themselves in a race against time, climbing through tilting train cars to avoid a deadly fall.

Regarding the future of Ethan Hunt, while the story of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” concluded in its own right, the IMF team couldn’t stop Gabriel. In the second part of the story, titled “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two,” Ethan Hunt will return next summer, prepared to confront one of his most dangerous enemies for the last time. Directed by McQuarrie once again, this installment may mark Cruise’s final portrayal of this iconic character.
